The Lios (pronounced ‘liss’) is an installation work, comprising two separate immersive environments. The work is thematically focused on the lios at Warren Beach, near Ballymacoda in East Cork , and the surrounding area. Through a combination of audio walks, and interviews with young and elderly local residents, the work builds up layers of memory and time. The Lios evokes one version of the geography of place by combining oral history with experimental motion-sensing and haptic (touch-sensitive) interfaces. The work involves walking barefoot on sand and grass; visitor movement in the space, and of hands in water summon troubling sound worlds. The Lios premiered in Ireland and England in 2004.
